I think the creative period of R&B goes back further than the '80's. The '70's had Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass, Issac Hayes, Earth, Wind & Fire and Stevie. I think Black music lost "some" but not all, of its creativity with the coming of hip-hop which heavily sampled from earlier eras of Black music because many of these new artists were/are severely limited when it comes to musical composition.
