3rd verse refers to her having changed in the stuggle to survive the abuse. That in doing so she had to forever say goodbye to her innocence, to turn her back on that innocence (do her harm). Now that she has entered into the world revealed to her under that bridge, that knowledge, she is nolonger innocent. Her pain is her daughter's moan. That child inside us all, that we carry with us (took her home).

2nd verse follows this logic. She refers to her youthful innocence as her daughter, that she gently holds onto and protects it, but that she wont see it (her) again.

Amazing, just discovered this gem. Instantly conquered me. My take on the lyrics...Yes this is about rape of a child. The blood red dress of hers is symbollic in many ways, sex, blood (loses of virginity), seduction..The first verse is about her being raped under a bridge and how she losses her innocence (the daughter). And she (the abused, the whore, the jaded) protects the child from this knowledge.

Lately there are a lot of great bands and singer/songwriters among us, like Amy Winehouse, Adèle, Amy Macdonald, Lisa Hannigan, Damien Rice, The Frames, Gabriella Cicli, She Wants Revenge (inspired by Joy Division & Depeche Mode), Maria Mena, and a lot of other kind musicians, but it's obvious that music is changing again and this time for the better, a lot of new artists with old heroes, from the 30's 'till now in all sorts of musicgenres, you just need to listen closely, they are out there. |
