Just as another note, towards the end of the song, Fredrick suffers his own heartbreak as he watched his wife run away with his son (the two are similar in age). Desiree and Fredrick become a couple. You really should see the show- a lot of people consider it Sondheim's best.

Henshall is singing as Desiree, an actress on the tail end of her career, to Fredrick, a lawyer and former lover of hers. Since their relationship ended years before, he married a young woman and is infatuated with her. They are in her bedroom, and he has no intent to cheat on his wife. She loves him, but realizes this, and is singing this song to him because she is mourning her missed chance to have him.

Such a wonderful rendition of this song! I like all the emotion she put into it - I think she nailed it. Such a gorgeous voice, too.

whilst Judi Dench is amazing she also speaks mostly all of the piece cuts phrases short etc. for artistic expression. both ladies are incredibly talented I think it's safe to say
