Bjorn Borg won this match from John McEnroe, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2). In case it's not clear, Borg makes his first protest at 3-all in the second-set tiebreak. I've included the three points that followed because what McEnroe did was extraordinary.Borg and McEnroe played this match in January 1981, after splitting five-set finals at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. It was one of the most highly anticipated matches of the Open Era. A sellout crowd of 19,103 was in attendance at Madison Square Garden. At the time this constituted a record and was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as one of the largest crowds ever to attend a tennis match.

if you ever hit with a wood racquet youd understand what im saying.... even total hacks can hit the ball really hard with the new frames....it took real precision to hit with wood....which chris evert did with unbelievable accuracy over and over.....i doubt the williams girls would have ever reached the top with wood..

Jesus what a freaking dumbass jerk of an empire. Maybe he was so bitchy because he was jealous of Borg's beautiful head full of blonde hair, LOL.

How did wood keep people from hitting it "only as hard as a human body could propel it" as opposed to the rackets we have now? (rhetorical question, btw)

i'm 24 and i know a lot about the history of tennis. don't make me laugh. BTW is that a wood cane or a metal one?

well considering youre probably 12 and know nothing about the history of the sport, ill overlook your old timer crap remark....the sport was intended to be played "under the sign of wood" so that a ball could only be hit as hard as a human body could propel it. the only technique thats changed is that everyone bashes the ball with heavy topspin to keep it in play...and McEnroe was one of the players leading the charge to change back to wood....now let me get my cane and beat you over the head..
