It could have been a number of things, I think it COULD (This is a guess people don't kill me over it :p) have been too heavy, and in that case yeah the runway woud've been too short :\

I don't get how this would mean the plane cant get off the ground... was this a very short runway or something?

they take off with flaps extended, this pilot had done that but they hadnt extended properly and the warning that should be given never sounded so the pilots were unaware of any problem

Same kind of crash happened in Detroit August 16, 1987. Northwest MD-80 Flt 255, The pilots were having casual conversation during the pre-take off checklist and forgot to set the flaps properly. The flap circuit was pulled because they were annoid by the warning sound of the flaps not being set. It barely got off the ground clipping a light pole and crashing along under a railroad overpass and settling in peices on the I-94 freeway. A 2 year old girl was the only survivor out of 156 people. Sad

Because a commercial pilot would forget to put the flaps up in a take off... |
