I love this lyric. It captures the speaker's delusional quality (he will preserve her beauty forever, whether this is in his memory, through the immortality of vampires, or because she will die rather than grow old), his desperate sincerity (swearing on Jesus), and the energy escaping from his restraint here and there (4:24). I compare it with Radiohead's "Creep," the Flys' "Got You Where I Want You," and the cellar scene from Schindler's List with Ralph Fiennes and the maid. Great art.TGF

True art stands up to people's varying interpretations, as ryangfilm said. The situation in the song could be a sexual homicide; it could be a vampire; it could be merely a bad case of young male hormones mixed with teen angst. The title [though I know the main reference is to the lake] even brings to mind 'playing possum,' which in my grandpa's parlance meant pretending to be asleep; death and sleep have been compared a million times, from Hamlet to Snow White.TGF

They don't sound like country. They have a twang because the lead singer is from texas and has the accent. The sound you're searching for is blues. ...or maybe I'm wrong. Hell it could sound like country but I've always thought they were more bluesy...not like I have anything against country...
